Carey Grant Miles

Carey Grant Miles, age 62, was called home to eternal rest on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at the IU Methodist Hospital Hospice Unit in Indianapolis, Indiana, surrounded by his three sons and loving family. Carey was born on July 11, 1963, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He attended IPS School #110, John Marshall High School, and Arsenal Technical High School. At just 17 years old, Carey answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army, where he earned his high school diploma while serving. Carey proudly served his country with honor and dedication. During his military career, he was stationed at Fort Gordon, Fort Sill, Fort Lewis, Fort Campbell, Bamberg, Germany, Aschaffenburg, Germany, and served in the United States Army Reserves. After serving in Desert Storm, Carey returned home to the city he loved most — Indianapolis. After returning home, Carey built a strong work career and was employed by Nabisco, Citizens Gas & Coke, and Heritage before taking ill. No matter where life took him, Carey proudly represented his hometown. On weekends, he could be found wearing his Colts and Pacers jerseys, making sure everyone knew he was from Indy. Carey grew up in the Crosstown neighborhood, where he maintained lifelong friendships and deep community ties. He also remained close with many of his Army brothers, including Brian “Slugo” Gatson, with whom he enjoyed family trips, and James Myers, whom he frequently visited in Georgia. Carey loved the significance of his birthday — 7/11 — his lucky numbers. On 7/11/1992, he chose that special date to marry Sherri Lynn Taylor. From that union came the greatest joys of his life — his three kings, whom he lovingly called “413” in honor of their birth months: Cameron, Cortez, and CaRon. Although Carey and Sherri later parted ways, they remained committed to raising their sons together. Carey was a member of Jones Tabernacle AME Zion Church, where he served on the Men’s Usher Board for many years. Carey loved his sons deeply and was the ultimate family trip planner. He enjoyed road trips, spending time at his parents’ farm in Rhonda, North Carolina, and keeping family traditions alive. Each year, he made sure to attend a Pacers game with his sons. He was also a Colts season ticket holder who loved tailgating with his brothers and friends. Carey also had a special love for his loyal companions — all three Chevy’s, his beloved dogs, who brought him comfort and joy. Carey requested that he acknowledged his friends by name and said if he forgot anyone… his bad… but much love for my Citizens Gas brothers. He also said thank you to those who visited, texted, or communicated through his sons to check on him during his illness. His Crosstown and childhood brothers included: Ed Grady, David Brim, Willie Russell, Keith Griffin, William “Chubby” Collins, Steve Martin, Kevin “Big Bird” Easley, and Steve Floyd. He also loved his extended Crosstown Family: the Laners, Stovall’s, Easley’s, Ackles, Bunch, Turner, Nance, Moon, Kit, and McVey families. He shared a special brotherhood with his Citizens Gas & Coke brothers: George “Spoony” Douglas, Ed Rogers, Kevin Stuart, Ray Fields, Eddie Capler, Charles McGee, Todd Davidson, Michael Easley, Douglas Harrell, Robert Nelson, Rick McDonald (RIP), and Alphonso Brooks (RIP), who would often meet for lunch regularly over the years. He was preceded in death by his parents Barbara Jean Hunt, Helen Miles-Coe, and Robert Miles; stepfather Paul Hunt; grandmothers Carrie Coe and Helen Johnson; grandfathers William Coe and James Johnson; brothers Roland Miles and Anthony Miles; sister-in-law Kat Miles of Tucson, Arizona; and mother-in-love Diane Winters Taylor. He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved sons: Cameron Robert Miles, Cortez Grant Miles (Jennysha), and CaRon Taylor Miles. He is also survived by his brothers Vern on Miles Sr., Kevin Miles (Fran), and Derek Miles Sr.; sisters Sheryl Miles and Deborah Bouie (Elbert); a host of nieces and nephews; extended family; dear friends; and countless lives he touched. During his illness, Carey requested that family and friends show their love by wearing red to his service. On a funny note, we are going to miss Carey’s Macoroni annnnnnnnd Cheese. If you know you know! and his grilled cabbage. He also requested his favorite foods be served at the repass to remember him by: BBQ, Mac and Cheese, Black Eye Peas, chitlings and cabbage…lol.
